Accepted Pre-Requisites for the STA Certificate in Swimming Teaching
Posted on 22nd March 2017
STA would like to remind course organisers, tutors and examiners of the accepted pre-requisites for the STA Certificate in Swimming Teaching – specifically, what is considered an acceptable pre-requisite qualification to attend the course.
Since September 2014, STA has not accepted the ASA Level 1 Swimming Assistant (Teaching) qualification as a pre-requisite for attending an STA Certificate course. The reason for this is that, being a level 1 assistant teaching qualification, the ASA Level 1 does not qualify the holder to teach without supervision. The STA Award in Swimming Teaching qualification does qualify the holder to teach without supervision and is a level 2 qualification; hence they are not a like-for-like qualification in terms of content and delivery.
In order to ensure that all STA swimming teachers have the correct knowledge and skills expected to meet the standards of the course, we cannot accept the ASA Level 1 as a pre-requisite for the STA Certificate. If a candidate only holds the ASA Level 1, they must first attend an STA Award course.
