COVID Adaptations within First Aid Qualifications
Posted on 11th April 2022
Further to our recent communication regarding the end of covid adaptations to lifesaving qualification training and assessments, the First Aid Quality Partnership (FAQP) has updated the guidance in relation to first aid training.
The updated ‘Delivering First Aid During the Continuing Pandemic’ document is now available.
Approved Training Centres (ATCs) should read and consider the recommendations within the guidance. These coincide with STA’s strong recommendations that ATCs maintain their hygiene and cleaning procedures as well as have good ventilation within training rooms. Learners are permitted to wear face coverings should they wish.
The FAQP guidance on rescue breaths remains unchanged; learners are not required to demonstrate rescue breaths on an adult sudden collapse casualty. However, following the decision alongside other Awarding Organisations, STA strongly recommends that rescue breaths are taught, demonstrated and assessed as normal practice within all qualifications.
There is no evidence linking COVID transmission with practicing CPR using a resuscitation manikin, with normal hygiene procedures in place. Rescue breaths alongside chest compressions are more effective than just chest compressions and therefore it is important learners are given an opportunity to practice and develop these skills.
