Changes to STA Award and STA Certificate in Teaching Swimming Qualification Assessment Methodology!
Posted on 26th April 2022
Following feedback from learners, tutors, assessors and Approved Training Centres, Safety Training Awards (STA) has reviewed and is changing the assessment method from portfolio completion to Multiple-Choice Question Assessments to the following qualifications:
- STA Award in Teaching Swimming
- STA Certificate in Teaching Swimming.
These changes will come into effect for all courses registered to start from Monday 20th June 2022.
Please note, learners will still be issued with a small portfolio as they are still required to complete a risk assessment, schemes of work, lesson plans and lesson evaluation forms as well as the on course practical teaching. Learners will still be externally assessed teaching a 30-minute lesson to 4 participants of the correct ability.
All supporting resources will be updated to reflect this change and will be available on STA Online from Monday 23rd May 2022 with mandatory use from 20th June. The updated qualification assessment strategies which include pass marks and timings will be available from 23rd May on STA Online.
The multiple-choice question assessment papers (MCQ) will be sent out two weeks prior to the course start date in a sealed envelope. All MCQ assessments must take place in examination conditions under the supervision of the course tutor. Learners must pass all units in order to pass the theory assessment. If a learner fails a unit, they are only required to retake the failed unit, and this must be completed within 6 weeks of the assessment date.
