STA Launches New Backboard CPD
Posted on 21st December 2022
Following member requests, STA is pleased to announce the launch of a new Backboard CPD. The CPD will support pool operators who require a programme of training should their risk assessment identify the need to provide suitable aquatic pool extraction boards.
The STA Backboard CPD is designed to provide learners with knowledge, practical skills and understanding regarding the use of backboards for a casualty with a suspected spinal cord injury. It must be used in conjunction with site specific policies, procedures, and training.
Topics include:
- Spinal cord injury management
- In-water rescue techniques
- Types of backboard and their application
- Casualty aftercare and managing regurgitation
- Non-breathing suspected spinal injury casualty management.
Supporting CPD resources are available to download from STA Online now and include:
- PowerPoint Presentation
- Tutor Assessed Skills Sheet.
Lifesaving tutors with backboard competency* are eligible to deliver the CPD and should complete the tutor assessed skills sheet to determine a learner’s competency. A holistic assessment is permitted which allows tutors to assess and evaluate a learner’s communication skills, hazard awareness, problem solving / using initiative as well as practical skills.
If learners require a CPD certificate, a seminar can be registered on STA Online and upon successful completion, 1 CPD point will be awarded on the certificate. Rescuers should practise their techniques as often as necessary to maintain competence.
