STA Technical Notice Regarding World Aquatics and Change to Diving Depth Rules
Posted on 13th March 2023
STA would like to make members aware that FINA, the Fédération Internationale de Natation, are now known as World Aquatics. World Aquatics is the sole and exclusive world governing body for all Aquatics, overseeing competition in six aquatic sports:
- Swimming
- Diving
- High diving
- Artistic swimming
- Water polo
- Open water swimming.
In addition to this, World Aquatics have changed the guidance to the minimum pool depth required for competitive starts, from 0.9m to 1.35 meters. Only swimmers who have been taught to consistently execute a proficient flat racing dive with shallow entry into deep water to the complete satisfaction of the swimming teacher should be allowed to execute a racing dive into a minimum water depth of 1.35m.
“A minimum depth of 1.35m, extending from 1m to at least 6m from the end wall is required for pools with starting blocks. A minimum depth of 1m is required elsewhere.”
The teaching of diving must still be undertaken in water with a minimum depth of 1.8m and a forward clearance of 7.6m.
STA have updated the below resources to reflect these changes:
- STA Award in Teaching Swimming Resource Manual v22.2
- STA Award in Teaching Swimming PowerPoint Presentation v23.1
- STA Award in Teaching Swimming Suggested Timetable v23.1
- STA Certificate in Teaching Swimming Resource Manual v1.0
- STA Certificate in Teaching Swimming PowerPoint Presentation v23.1
- SAMPLE STA Certificate in Teaching Swimming MCQ Paper v23.1
The updated resources are now available on STA Online.

An errata sheet for the STA Certificate in Teaching Swimming manual has been created and will be sent out with all hard copy resource manual orders from today and is available to download from STA Online. The only affected page within the STA Award in Teaching Swimming manual is page 10: World Aquatics. Reference to FINA changed to World Aquatics.
STA have created insert PowerPoints which only contains the updated slides to allow tutors to insert these into already established presentations. STA have also updated the STA Competitive Starts and Turns certificates and tick sheets.
