STA would like to reiterate the procedure to follow if a learner is unsuccessful during an STA qualification assessment.

If a learner is unsuccessful in the end-of-course assessment, a Unit Failure Report Form should be completed. This should be retained by the ATC and a copy given to the learner.

The learner is only required to re-take the required assessment element, for example:

• • If a learner fails the practical, they are only required to re-sit the practical element
  • If a learner fails the multiple-choice assessment paper, they are only required to re-sit the assessment paper
    • If a learner should fail the multiple-choice assessment paper, they are only required to re-take the unit(s) they failed.

The re-take of an assessment paper or a practical assessment must be completed within the required timeframe specified in the qualification assessment strategy.

All retakes must be registered with Safety Training Awards via STA Online. Associated fees can be found here. ATCs should provide learners with constructive, developmental feedback and support learners in order to be fully prepared for the initial assessment and any required retake assessment.

Due to the type of qualifications we offer (license to practice competency-based qualifications), we can only permit 1 assessment retake.

On completion of the qualification, a learner has been deemed competent on the practical skills and knowledge to be issued with a qualification certificate. A license to practice that role, for example, be a swimming teacher, baby and pre-school teacher, or lifesaver.

As we are stating competency, we cannot permit a learner to continuously retake an assessment until they pass; this does not offer employers assurance that a person with the qualification is able to do the role or evidence competency.

If a learner has been unsuccessful following a retake, i.e., they have been unable for a second time to demonstrate the knowledge and or skills required to meet the assessment criteria and therefore pass the qualification, the learner must undertake another course of instruction to gain these.

ATCs should provide learners with clear information on the course assessment process, including the process in the event a learner is unsuccessful during the qualification assessment.
