STA Launch New First Aid: Management of Life-threatening Bleeding CPD Following FAQP Position Statement

Posted on 29th January 2025

The First Aid Quality Partnership (FAQP) have released a position statement regarding life-threatening bleeding.

The FAQP recommend:

  • First aid training providers should teach the application of an improvised tourniquet and improvised wound packing for life-threatening bleeding on First Aid at Work courses
  • Employers that identify workplace hazards with a specific risk of life-threatening bleeding should follow HSE guidance and the use of manufactured tourniquets and haemostatic dressings would be appropriate. Employers should confirm with their first aid training provider that the application of manufactured tourniquets and haemostatic techniques are included in training and assessment in addition to the standard first aid syllabus.

As recommended in the FAQP position statement, STA strongly recommended tutors begin teaching the improvisation of tourniquet application and improvised wound packing on all STA First Aid at Work courses if competent to do so.

Note: Competence can be described as a combination of training, skills, experience, and knowledge that a person has and their ability to apply them to perform a task safely.

To support tutors who may require additional training to teach these elements, STA is pleased to launch today the First Aid: Management of Life-threatening Bleeding CPD. The online programme is aimed at STA First Aid / Lifesaving tutors to provide additional information on the management of life-threatening bleeding and covers:

  • First Aid Skills
  • The Cardiovascular System
  • Primary Survey
  • Wounds and Bleeding
  • Life-threatening Bleeding
  • Haemostatic Agents
  • Tourniquets
  • Penetrating Chest Injury / Collapsed Lung
  • Internal Bleeding.

In addition, we are pleased to be able to provide new training aids to support course delivery should tutors and ATCs wish to purchase from the STA Swim-Shop.

There will be no immediate changes to STA First Aid at Work learning outcomes and assessment criteria.

The First Aid Awarding Organisation Forum (FAAOF), of which STA are members, will review first aid qualification learning outcomes and assessment criteria following the publication of the 2025 Resuscitation Council UK (RCUK) guidelines, which is expected to be around November 2025.

This gives tutors and ATCs time to adjust to the new additional skills to be taught, acquire relevant training equipment and manage the upskilling of tutors if needed.
