HSE Updates to STA First Aid Courses

Posted on 20th June 2016

Following the recent update from the HSE, STA are happy to update our tutors regarding blended learning, the use of AEDs in first aid courses, haemostatic dressings and tourniquet training.

Blended Learning for First Aid

The HSE are now accepting blended learning as a form of teaching for Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) and First Aid at Work (FAW) courses. This means that training providers can now deliver a blended learning course consisting of face-to-face and online learning.

Employers must be satisfied that the online learning elements are as effective as face-to-face learning, and that the training providers ensure the following:

  • There are systems in place to prevent identity fraud
  • There is sufficient time to complete online elements and practical assessments
  • There is adequate support for the user should any problems arise

STA plans to launch online training in the near future offering blended learning options to tutors and employers.

Use of AEDs in First Aid Training

The HSE have stated that mandatory AED training should be included within EFAW and FAW courses from December 31st 2016 as per the new UK resuscitation guidelines.

Learners attending EFAW and FAW courses do not need to complete the full AED syllabus, but will need to demonstrate competence in the correct placement of AED pads and be able to follow the instructions of the AED.

Following these changes, STA will be selling mini-AEDs which tutors can use on all first aid courses. These will be available for sale at the 2016 STA Conference and from the STA Swim-Shop.

Haemostatic Dressings and Tourniquet Application

Following the recent review of first aid by the European Resuscitation Council it has now been identified that, where a first aid risk assessment highlights the likelihood of a life-threatening bleed, haemostatic dressings and tourniquets should be included within a first aid kit and relevant training provided.

STA will be offering training in haemostatic dressings and tourniquets at the 2016 STA Conference, free of charge. Training will be provided by ex-military medical personnel and all tutors in attendance will be qualified to deliver this training as part of the EFAW and FAW syllabi or as a standalone course. Anyone who does not attend this update at the conference will be offered the opportunity to complete an online up-skill at a later date.

STA aims to implement these changes to first aid courses from Monday 2nd January 2017. If you have any questions about these changes, please do not hesitate to contact us.
