Technical Notice: Changes to First Aid, Pool Emergency Responder, Health and Safety Qualification Assessment Methodology

Following feedback from learners, tutors, assessors and Approved Training Centres, Safety Training Awards (STA) has reviewed and changed the assessment method from portfolio completion to Multiple-Choice Question Assessments for the following qualifications:
- STA Award in Emergency First Aid at Work
- STA Award in First Aid at Work
- STA Award in Emergency Paediatric First Aid
- STA Award in Paediatric First Aid
- STA Award for Pool Emergency Responder
- STA Award in Safe Moving and Handling
- STA Award in Fire Marshall Training.
These changes will come into effect for all courses registered to start from Monday 6th September 2021.
All supporting resources will be updated to reflect this change and will be available on STA Online from Monday 9th August 2021 with mandatory use from 6th September. The updated qualification assessment strategies which include pass marks and timings will be available from 9th August on STA Online.
The multiple-choice question assessment papers (MCQ) will be sent out two weeks prior to the course start date in a sealed envelope. All MCQ assessments must take place in examination conditions under the supervision of the course tutor. Learners must pass all units in order to pass the theory assessment. If a learner fails a unit, they are only required to retake the failed unit and this must be completed within 6 weeks of the assessment date.

As part of the assessment review the following qualifications from Monday 6th September only require a practical assessment:
- STA Award in Basic Life Support and Safe Use of an Automatic External Defibrillation
- STA Award in Basic Life Support and Management of Anaphylaxis.
These changes will come into effect for all courses registered to start from Monday 6th September 2021.
