Technical Notice: Resuscitation Council 2021 Guidelines
Posted on 17th June 2021
The Resuscitation Council have released the 2021 guidelines, which include updated resuscitation and first aid guidelines.
The updated 2021 guidelines can be found on Resuscitation Council UK and European Resuscitation Council Guidelines 2021: First aid.
In partnership with the first aid awarding organisation forum, Safety Training Awards (STA) have been reviewing the updated guidelines to determine what this means for our qualifications.
The former guidelines remain valid for a 12-month transition period; therefore, all current qualification manuals and resources are still fit for purpose. STA are currently updating the affected qualification resource manuals as well as the supporting resources in line with the new guidelines. STA will notify all Approved Training Centres, Tutors and Assessors once the updated resources are ready.
As well as updating the qualification resources, STA will also provide a technical overview update regarding the new guidelines. To review the full guidelines, please visit Resuscitation Council UK and European Resuscitation Council Guidelines 2021: First aid.
STA would like to make Approved Training Centres, Tutors and Assessors aware of two important clarifications agreed between Resuscitation Council UK and the first aid industry:
- Child and infant CPR will remain at a 30:2 ratio for those who ‘care for children but are unlikely to have to resuscitate them’ – this includes paediatric first aiders
- Infant chest compressions should continue to be taught to first aiders using the 2-finger technique.
STA will release further information shortly.
