STA Suggested Pool Plant Course Activities – Ideas and Guide
Posted on 24th January 2023
Following member requests, and collaboration with STA’s 2022 Pool Plant Brand Ambassadors, STA is pleased to announce the release of a bank of pool plant course activities. These have been created to assist in engaging learners, facilitating self-learning, and offering a break from the traditional chalk and talk PowerPoints. The activities lend themselves to group or individual learning.
The activities can be used in a number of different ways, they can be printed in advance, laminated, cut out and re-used or adapted, so they can be delivered online via various websites and apps. The course activities are not mandatory, tutors can decide on which and how many they would like to use on a single course. The activity bank will be reviewed regularly however, STA welcomes feedback and suggestions on these and different activities which may be included. Some ideas of how the course activities could be used are detailed below.
Pollution Match Activity
Learners to match the example of pollution to the correct category.
Disease and Infection Description Match Activity
Learners to match the disease / infection to the applicable description.
Free Chlorine Test Sequence
Learners to put the free chlorine test sequence into the correct order.
Total Chlorine Test Sequence
Learners to put the total chlorine test sequence into the correct order.
pH Test Sequence
Learners to put the pH test sequence into the correct order.
Active Free Chlorine Cards
These can be used when learners are doing the practical water testing session. Learners can carry out tests for themselves or tutors can provide some example results for free chlorine and pH. Learners can then work out the Active Free Chlorine from the results. White board markers allow you to re-use these, or alternatively you can use the table in the manual for learners to refer to.
Langelier Index and Balanced Water Cards
Learners can carry out the required tests for balanced water and calculate the balanced water test from the results. Alternatively, tutors can provide different sets of results for learners to work out the water balance.
Test Type and Recommended Parameter
Learners to match the test type to the recommended parameter.
Disinfectant Match Activity
Match the disinfectant to the applicable description.
pH Chart
Learners categorise each chemical to show what it is for and what its pH is. These can either be labelled using white board markers or the accompanying labels can be used to put in the correct positions on the chart.
Manual Dosing Calculations
Learners to do a manual dosing calculation.
Bather Load, Circulation Rate and Turnover
Learners to calculate the bather load, circulation rate and turnover for a pool. This could be for a pool that they work at or the tutor could provide examples of pool dimensions.
Blank Schematics
These can either be labelled using white board markers or the accompanying labels can be used to put in the correct positions around the schematic.
Filter Board with Movable Valves
Once assembled the filter can be used for labelling activities as well as demonstrating the different valve arrangements involved in the filtration process.
Filtration Velocity
Learners to calculate filtration velocity. This could be for a pool that they work at or the tutor could provide examples of pool volume, turnover and filter diameter.
Temperature Match
Learners to match the recommended temperature range to the applicable activity / pool.
Suggested Maintenance Schedule Match Activity
Match the maintenance task to the recommended frequency.
